After two years, the Germans were back and they brought five BMW M1s to South-Africa, with many Formula 1 drivers for them: Jochen Mass, John Watson, Marc Surer, Hans Stuck and a number of South-African stars as well as youngsters and oldsters from Germany and Austria. They were the class of the field, only an old Zakspeed Escort with V6 engine and a Mazda with Derek Bell behind the wheel played any role on the front.
From row two, Stuck took the lead and opened a 10-second gap; but a failed fuel stop had to be repeated - so the lead was lost to the Schnitzer pair Surer/van Rooyen, but the latter was slower than the German-speaking brigade, so Winkelhock took the lead again after 135 laps - but then the gearbox broke on the Schnitzer car. Stuck/Winkelhock ran into suspension problems and had to settle for second, behind Kelleners/Keizan.
