In 1979, for the first time there was no new frontrunning car to be expected; after Jaguar (1976), Alpina (1977) and Mercedes (1978) it was back to basics with three BMW's (of which the Juma car was built with help from Alpina); Zakspeed fielded a two-car team for the whole year, and that was it - the planned Luigi Camaro never materialized.
Thirteen rounds, no less, and they were all won by BMW; it was the last year the CSL could race so it was a fitting end for this car. In the end, Finotto and Facetti won the championship with the 1977 Alpina car - though Alpina wanted to have nothing to do with it anymore.
