The front row powered away as one, Craft cheekily trying to make it four abreast, but the Mazda of Walkinshaw had the inside advantage. Woodman slotted into second, ahead of Graham, Muir, Craft, Allam, Spice, Greenslade and the rest.
As the Capris sorted themselves out the fleet Pentax RX7 was able to prize open a slight gap, and by the end of the first lap Walkinshaw was very much in command.
Walkinshaw continued to lead comfortably from Woodman and Graham, until the latter made a quick pit stop on lap eight, which dropped him to seventh overall behind Greenslade, who had been driving a steady race. Ahead of Greenslade now were Blackburn, who had passed him a few laps earlier after making a tardy start, Muir, Craft and the leaders. Graham also got ahead of the Triplex Dolly a lap later, and started charging through the remaining Capris. By lap twelve he was in fourth place, a position in which he was destined to finish.
Craft had a very lonely race to third place; up front, although Woodman was able to keep the class record breaking Mazda very much in sight, it was the day of the Japanese car. Gordon Spice, whom we are more accustomed to seeing in the premier position, made a storming recovery to fifth, behind Graham. Muir and Blackburn finished sixth and seventh, Greenslade eighth, almost lapped by the flying class leader. Tenth was Richard Lloyd, who had no real opposition from Percy's off-form Toyota, Alan Curnow took the Mini battle after another good tussle with Richard Longman.
