Division 1
Georg Loos was fed up with following the invincible Kremer Porsche: “Either Porsche takes action and build me a competitive car, or I’ll quit.” In fact, the changed until then had not been very successful: despite 3.3 engine, new rear body and air/air intercoolers, Fitzpatrick could follow easily with his standard 935. And neither of them came even remotely close to Ludwig, who won the race with 28 seconds in hand. His only comment afterwards: “Stommelen had a jump start - no other problems.”
Stommelen’s jump start was in vain, Ludwig already had taken the lead at Tarzan corner, and Stommelen retired anyway in lap 11.
Division 2
Zakspeeds problems started in practice already: it was discovered that Heyer’s car had had a bent rear suspension at the Norisring, but a new axle gave a trouble-free pole - though the sorrows on the distributor were still there; a late try for a faster time resulted in another broken distributor. But after that, the distributor stayed in one piece, but Heyer’s engine did not: he blew it in a big way in the warmup. The engine was replaced in time for the race.
Heyer took the lead after the start, with Winkelhock close behind- the young BMW driver confident of his car since the discovery that he clocked second place on the grid with a throttle slide which opened for only 75%... In lap 10, he took the lead when Heyer’s throttle stuck open, he drive to second a fine achievement considering this problem. Winkelhock won, but the man on a mission had been Höttinger: his Procar drive in Dijon meant no practice for him, but he sliced through the field and when he tried to pass Ertl and Grohs at the same time he overdid it and spun - and retired later with a blown head gasket.
Serious problems for Grohs: after a fine battle with Ertl he retired with a puncture, and after the finish team principal Hohmann told him that it was enough; 6 races, only one result: “I’m going to do sportscar races after this, I quit group 5...”
