Division 1
Liqui Moly had built their own 1977-style rear body with some help from Zimmermann, the K3 builders - and an air/air cooler as well, unlike Wollek’s car. Loos found out that Stommelen even had a 3.3 engine now, and both in practice as in the race, Wollek was now the fastest-but-two Porsche instead of the fastest-but one... Fitzpatrick might have turned things Loos’ way, but a spin after a great start resulted in a spin and fourth at the finish.
By the way, Ludwig clocked pole with a sick car, and with a new engine he won the race with ease.
Division 2
Finally, the GS BMW if Höttinger showed promise - and a lot of it. His car, rumoured to have 480 HP went from fourth on the grid to first in only 9 laps - and was both on the straights and in the corner the fastest car on the track. That Zakspeed landed a double victory in the end had two reasons: the wastegate of the GS turbo failed, so Höttinger had to finish with a 1.4 atmo car, and Winkelhock who had taken the lead initially with a great start but a slow puncture forced him to stop; a fine drive one lap down brought him to third in the end. The decision between the Zakspeeds were the tires; Ertl had a softer compound and could pass Heyer when he ran into a backmarker - thereafter, Heyer was incapable of passing Ertl again. Bürger finished fifth as first atmo car, while Selzer won the Rennsporttrophäe class.
