Vic Elford – Ford Lotus Cortina

Though the Norisring race was originally more a sportscar race than a touring car highlight like today, public interest was large in the four classes which raced here.
DM 1000 was available for the fastest overall time for the touring cars, where Schiek (DB 300 SE), Elford (works Lotus Cortina) and Schnitzer (BMW) all felt they were able to return home with the cheque.
Schnitzer clocked 34.24,8, but Elford was faster, beating him in the same race, with 34.16,5 - and then came Schiek with the big Benz, in a race which combined the two biggest classes. It seemed impossible that the large and somewhat outdated Mercedes could beat the Cortina’s time. Schiek tried anyhow, and hammered down 8 laps in true Böhringer-style. Then he spun in lap 9 at the entry of the S-curve, coming to a complete standstill and lost 8 seconds at least. He continued ever more aggressive, nearly lost it again at the very same corner and finished in 34.13,7 - he won!
